Welcome to the Parish of St Mary, Rothwell

Beginning in 1915 Catholics in the Rothwell area attended Mass in St George’s Hospital, served from St Joseph’s parish in Hunslet. Later the Rothwell Mechanics’ Institute was used as a Mass centre. The present church was built in 1937, from designs by Charles Fox of Dewsbury. The foundation stone was laid by Bishop Poskitt in July 1937. St Mary’s was made a separate parish in 1948. Today it serves a large area between Leeds and Wakefield, encompassing Carlton, Lofthouse, Oulton, Robin Hood and Woodlesford.

Masses suspended and all Catholic churches closed across Britain

In compliance with government instructions as from 23rd March 2020, Bishop Marcus has, with sadness, asked that our church buildings be closed with immediate effect until further notice. Fr Éamon will continue to say Mass in private, praying particularly for the needs of the Parish and all affected by the situation we find ourselves in.
